that forecast. christy smith and marla taes are tracking that. >> good morning to you, john. we're starting to get some on and off sprinkl this morning. it does feel like the wind is picking up at the bay bridge toll plaza. let me step aside so you can see what the traffic has done. too early for those big pools of standing water in the roadway. we drove the bridge this morning a little earlier when it was windy. more so on the san francisco side. enough to grab the steering wheel tight. winds expected to blow up to 50 miles an hour. you may not see the wind advisory just yet but i just got off the phone with the chp and they're telling me maybe soon. among the busy ones today, the bay bridge truck drivers. he says, in his opinion, one of

the morning starts this way, in his opinion, the evening commute ends up much smoother because people slow down and make those necessary changes. the american flag, still wind moving very briskly. reporting live at the bay bridge toll plaza, christy smith, "today in the bay." crews are hoping a hillside that collapsed will hold up in the coming rain. construction vehicles and hay baels now line the street. the city has spent nearly half a million dollars to shore up that hillside. crews have been working to replace soil and sand watched away in the slide. because the storm is going

to be giving you a view of the forecast, let's check in with christina. >> a big area. a lot of ground to cover. the heaviest rain has not yet arrived. we're just getting the lighter rain at this point. you want to travel cautiously. most of the roadways across the north bay and along the peninsula are wet at this point. we're still relatively dry at san jose. that extends all the way to freemont. as we head through the next couple of hours, we are going to see the bulk of the moisture come through. the winds are going to pick up. just as we're noticing. at 25 miles per hour. we are getting gusts to 40 miles per hour. that's enough to knock you around in the higher elevations and over our open water bridges. so keep that in mind this morning. what you can expect in the next few days. first rounds of heavy wind and

rain. then round number two late thursday and friday. storm number three will tap into what we call an atmospheric river. a tropical moisture tap on the way. we're going to tyke these systems out to your doorstep coming up. 6:03. first, let's check on your drive. >> our live camera, we're looking into the toll plaza. we've seen some rain come through. a lot more cars now at the toll plaza for these cash lanes. we're looking at metering lights to turn on. we'll show you the approach. even though there is not a real big puddling situation at the toll plaza itself, we'll show you green throughout the area. potential for that rain.

the commute down through berkeley still okay for the east shore freeway. still wet for 580 and 680 in patches. just a little mist in slicker conditions. 580 builds where there are very likely strong winds coming through the area. we're looking to the south bay. you see 680 there. the accident on the shoulder. we have some slowing. not quite as strong a build as we typically see. we'll show you a live look for freemont. southbound with the headlines, you see, flapping strongly as the wind blows. close to 50 and 60 miles south of the dunbar bridge. as you come over the high rise, you're likely to get caught with strong gusts. dunn barton, a smooth build. no problems at the interchange all the way into the city. people will keep a close eye

on the creek over the next few days. the city helped people in the community get prepared for possible flooding by handing out free sandbags. the goal is to prevent businesses near the creek from being submerged like years past. the risk for flooding is expected to be highest on friday with up to 5 inches of rain expected in the north bay. could be increased to even 7 according to christina. bay area rivers could rise anywhere between 3 and 10 feet. we recommend you give yourself a lot of time. a live look outside. san jose. you can expect wet roads out there. a lot of whipping winds. gusts around 50 miles per hour. viewers already sending us photos of stormy conditioning,c. this is from overnight. we want to see your photos of all the wind and weather. you can share them on twitter or instagram using #nbcbayarea.

light rain. for now, the heavier rainfall is still off shore. we're about an hour away. as we take a look at that impressive batch of moisture. it's going to slowly make its way north. showers are making their way to the north. we already have flight delays out of sfo. we're expecting more. we will track this system and lighter cells, even the heavier cell, as we head throughout the morning hours. stay tuned. we have reporters all over the bay area. back to you, jon and laura. >> we're going to check in right now because this morning we're keep a close watch on those slick conditions on bay area roads. as we give you a live look on what you're facing, the bay bridge and the golden gate bridge. we continue our live coverage further south as we check in with "today in the bay's" marla taes. how's it looking up there? >> laura, let me just start by saying this, just because i'm not holding an umbrella does not

mean it is not raining. in the last 20 minutes, the rain and the wind have started to pick up. but it's still not too bad. in fact, i just got off the phone with a chp officer. he tells me that no problems reported throughout the bay area, so the roadways are looking good at this point, just after 6:00 now. and the morning commute heading into san jose, what you're looking at behind me, traffic northbound, 17, no problems here. traffic is moving at the limit. this is where your morning commute takes you. the speed limit is 55 miles per hour. so you're going to want to heed that speed limit today, all days, because of that tricky conditions you're going to find out here. now, one the things to keep in mind if you do drive a high-profile vehicle, hold on tight with both hands, because you are more prone to overturning, especially highway 17, notorious for its curves.

the best news to report, no problems to report for highway 17. live at the summit, marla tellez, "today in the bay." let's continue our live coverage. bob rydell is out on the road, northbound on 101 at san mateo. >> we just got done crossing the san mateo bridge. you definitely felt the gust of wind out there. we have a utility van we're driving. even if you're in your car, would not be surprised. was saying you want to keep your hands on the wheel. this is the first place where we've start see some rain. nothing significant. just heavy drizzle, as you're looking out the dash, heading northbound on 101, just south of sfo, maybe by a couple of miles. we are feeling the wind out here.

at this the level, we're not on a peak. we're not feeling it push the van around. the national weather advisory does have -- weather service does have wind advisories in effect throughout the bay area. and high wind warnings in the north bay coastline, san francisco and the peninsula coastline. you're talking about gusts as high as 65 miles an hour. and the lower lying areas, 40 to 50 miles per hour. this is something christina has been talking about. as the morning commute goes on, within the next two, three hours, you can expect condition, to worsen. right now, not so bad. just a heavy drizzle. right now, it's more just a wind issue. reporting live, approaching sfo, bob rydell, "today in the bay." we want to look at the day's top stories. a berkeley city council woman wants her city to consider putting a soda tax on the bal t

ballot. she floated this idea during last night's city council meeting. voters, they defeated a similar soda tax earlier this month. a bus driver being hailinged a hero after saving a girl from a burning bus. carrying the wheel-bound chair girl off the bus when the engine compartment caught fire. president obama meeting with yahoo! ceo and other leaders today to discuss the looming fiscal cliff. they are still trying to hammer out some kind of compromise. to avoid tax increases that would kick in starting january 1. yeah, meyers has been quiet since taking the reins at yahoo! back in july. >> she has been very busy. she just had a baby as well. we finally get to see meyers back in public. >> "fortune" magazine awarded her as one of the most powerful women in business.

companies would start doing that. and finally virgin america says it sold that flight we were talking about on monday for $49,000. you can have the whole airplane for a flight to vegas. virgin said it got a lot of bids. the airplane seats 130 peep and it was available for charter to the consumer electronics show. some of my friends talked about all contributing but we were too late. >> scott will just take you. >> we'll have to take the small jet. >> we'll settle. thanks. >> appreciate it. 6:15 now. we continue to watch the severe weather. the bay area gets hit by a severe front of storms. >> i'm doing it for you, everybody. i want to make sure you get to work safely. we got a lot of wet weather already coming down.

it got heavier rain on the way. southeast winds sustained at 11 miles per hour. we're expecting these winds to continue to increase as we head throughout the day. doppler radar tells the story. the bulk of the moisture is still off shore. right now, you've got slick conditions. san jose starting to get our first light rain. there's a lot more on the way. it's going to move up from the south. push to the north. and starting about 39 minutes away. let's time the system out for you. as we head through the next couple of days, you will have the opportunity to get outdoors. but there's three storm systems back to back to back as we head throughout the next few days. expecting consecutive rain for the next five, potentially six, days. as you can see right now, the two heaviest waves of moisture still off shore.

getting moderate rainfall. even the south bay getting slammed. showers start to let up in the north bay. we'll meet back here for our 11:00 broadcast. by 3:00 p.m., getting a little bit of a break. you have opportunities to go outdoors without having to dodge those showers. about 3:00 p.m. tomorrow, that's -- excuse me, on thursday, that's when we have our next heavy wave of moisture. if you want to get outdoors, you have 3:00 p.m. today to 3:00 p.m. thursday to do so. as we head through late thursday into friday, the second round comes through. that's going to create more havoc. the grounds will be saturated. look at what happens, same deal, morning drives, the next wave of heavy rain arrives. what's happened is subtropical moisture, an atmospheric river,

potentially bringing our totals up to 7 inches. san francisco, 6 inches of rain. and our highways are just not equipped to accept this type of rain rate. we want to keep that in mind. do your part. clear out your storm drains, if you can. clear out your neighbor's storm drains. that's going to make the situation better for everybody. periods of rain. saturday, we'll have a high surf. sunday, heavy rain continues. finally drying out for the second half of monday. the sun comes back out on tuesday. just want to make sure you're ready for this. i have not seen this much rain come down in this short of a duration of time since i've been here. we are expecting downed trees. those trees could take out power lines. we have reporters all across the bay area and they're going to bring you live reports over the next few hours. let's see how your drive is doing. >> the downed trees are a concern in the next couple of

hours. because that wind and the rain now combining. we'll report as soon as we find anything, but so far, no trees reported down. we're looking over here. this is the road block. the metering lights are on. we've been seeing more and more. making things a little more difficult. coming down to the area, the bridge down on the freeway right here. we'll bring you the live look. you see, first of all, the build. the volume here. some slicker conditions. the rain has traveled through. the wind is blowing you as well. that will be an issue across the bridgings. especially the high-rises. in fact, heading over the bridge to san rafael, you see a slower drive. misty. we have seen that kind of kicking up on the roads. northbound at railroad avenue. we just heard about a car that hit the center divide and spunk

around. keep that in mind as well. lower those speeds. heading across. west is your commute. we just see some flashing lights. we'll track this. there's mild slowing just past that, heading towards the bulk of the flat section and the high rise. an easy drive off of the high rise across the flow of traffic. our sky cam showing you there is a good deal of wind in san mateo. the interchange with 101 and into the city, okay there. that's from san mateo north and also west. 280 going to be slick. on the map where you see the blue, there may be some puddling. keep that in mind. the south bay shows that slowing as well. overall, you're moving pretty

smoothly, guys, back to you. calling for an investigation into the spike of gas prices between may and october. six senators, including dianne feinstein and barbara boxer want to know what role oil refineries played. analysts say a web of refinery problems including the fire at the richmond chevron refiny were to blame. senators aren't so sure. 6:21 right now. from the ground to the air, all those slick condition, os out te will be causing some problems. we are watching severe weather all across the bay area. taking a live look this morning. so far, heavy rain and strong winds not causing any delay. shaking our camera though. starting at about 8:00 this morn, the duty manager at the airport says to expect arriving flights into san francisco international. they could experience delays of up to four hours. we're also monitoring power outages. reporting two outages now in union city affecting about 150

people. still unclear whether or not those outages are weather related. crews out in force this morning in anticipation of the severe weather. we're getting updates every few minutes for them. >> 6:25 right now. christina loren is back. >> the winds are picking up. make sure you give yourself plenty of time. we're getting into the worst part of this system. the first of three to impact the bay area. strongest wind is in the north bay. speeds upwards of 25 miles per hour. look at what's heading our way it look at all that yellow and orange. that's going to slam the bay area. starting in the south bay, just t in time for the morning rush. 352 minutes away from saratoga and 36 minutes away from places like livermore, you'll get some

of that batch as we head through the next few hours. we're expecting very gusty winds. and travel cautiously this morning. let's check on the drive with mike. >> we're looking at palo alto where 101 flows nicely past university avenue. you see the cameras shaking. one the sky cams. you can see the camera shake here. another live look outside shows you how things are shaping up now for san jose. now we're holding kind of steady for north 101. we're seeing misting conditions. having made some of the slicker conditions. another live look outside shows you how things are along the east bay. this is north 880 past the coliseum. both picking up the volume.

welcome back. live to the new york stock exchange. as we ring in the day. last week, we had black friday. today's just a regular wednesday. on this wednesday november 28th, this is "today in the bay." happy wednesday. very good morning to everybody. >> this morning, it is stormy wednesday. we're watching the weather. taking a live look outside in san jose and san francisco.

today marks the first of four big storms expected to soak the bay area by the end of the week. in san rafal, between 6 to 10 inches of rain expected to fall in the north bay. giving you a live look at 101 in san rafael this morning. gusty winds expected so drivers are urged to be very careful on roads and bridges including the bay bridge. for more on that morning commute, let's check in with bob rydell. he's actually live along bay area roads this morning. how's it looking where you are? >> it's actually quite nice. southbound 101. what weem seen throughout the morning, we've been on the road, we've seen drizzle, spouts of gusty wind. as we head southbound from the sfo area, we definitely can feel the wind. now, we're going over the peak of the san mateo bridge, you

definitely expect it out there. as you take a ride across the bridges this morning, the dunbar and san mateo, bay, venetia, you are going to want to hold on, because there are these gusts of wind. even high wind warnings when you go to the peninsula coastline. of course, the city of san francisco. as far as the rain as i look west and i'm looking over the san mateo foothills, the coastline here, you can see the clouds coming in. you do see some patches of blue indicating light is coming through. maybe they're not as thick. i don't see the thick storm cloud coming in right away. so looks like, maybe another 30 to 40 minutes before it gets going. specifically 280, 101. i know christina has more on

that. figure out exactly when it's coming in here. meantime, reporting live, bob rydell, "today in the bay." >> wet conditions won't necessarily translate to snow. the storm all part of a warm system. below that mark, expect slick and slushy conditions out on the roadways leading up to the tahoe area. the coast guard asking the public to be very careful as winds churn up the ocean waves in the bay area and along the coast. the coast guard says wind gusts as high as nearly 50 miles per hour are possible. you should try to avoid low-lying beaches and avoid actually going out into the water. let's take an in depth look at that forecast as we continue our coverage. >> things are changing minute by minute. the winds are still strong but

we're not as close as to strong as we will be. let's look at the radar. just getting light showers now down to san francisco. the moisture sits to our south. this is going to move up as we head through the next hours. looks like we're going to get an inch just about everywhere across the bay area. this is the first three storm systems on the way. we get the bulk of the moisture during the heart of your morning drive. showers up and down the peninsula. as we head throughout 11:00 a.m., you'll get the heavier rainfall. all that activity pushes into the sierra nevada. we've got three store systems to get through. storm number one is going to provide the wind event. this is more of a wind event than a rain event. the winds will be at their

strongest. then our next system arrives late thursday into friday. 5 to 6 localized days rain means ponding on the roadways. with more wind on the way, we are expecting trees to go down. we are following this very closely. let's find out how your drive is shaping up. not so bad right now. >> it's calm right now. we've seen a slower build. kind of folks still easing back in. we're looking to northbound 101 where we have seen that build. traffic starting to kick in. slow with the yellow just below 60, past the airport. the green colored in, around the roads, that means good, but around the rest of the map, that means wet conditions and potential for slick roads.

that has changed dramatically over the last ten minutes. north 85 showed some slowing. 17, christina and i were talking, saying the weather is really hitting the 17 drivers here. no reports of that over the summit yet. south up toward the summit in the northbound and southbound directions, both. we'll give you a live look outside. southbound 880 starting to build. also coming off that san mateo bridge. one more live shot. i have flashing lights still on the right-hand shoulder. we've seen this for about 20 minutes. it is 6:36. a baby inside of a house as bullets fly in from the outside.

windy wednesday morning. the bulk of the moisture has not yet arrived. slick on the golden gate bridge. look at all that rain on the way. we're going to see very gusty winds, heavy rainfall over the greater bay area as we progress through the next hour. isolated thunderstorms, some strong at times, are expected to develop. we'll tell you where and how long we're expected to be in the thick of it, back over to you. looking for suspects they say opened fire on a home with a 4-month-old baby inside. police say the suspects shot into an empty parked car and then fired at least one shot into a house. eight people were home including a 4-month-old baby. police say the shooting appears to be gain related.

anyone with information should call gill roy police. the teenager accused of a crime spree will be tryled asie adult. facing a list of charges including murder. police say muldrow and 26-year-old jonathan wilbanks robbed four businesses and killed a man during a car jacking and also allegedly shot at a police officer. watching out for severe weather and waiting for rain. we're expecting dangerous conditions on the road. the first of several storms slam the bay area. live storm coverage just ahead. we are watching out for severe weather this morning as with take a live look at san rafael. one of many north bay cities expected to be soaked with more than six inches of rain. further south, we're expecting wind, rain, as well as as we give you a live look at the golden gate bridge, the bay bridge, as well as san jose and oakland. we have a team in place covering the entire bay area. mike and christina tracking your commute and forecast. christy and marla braving the elements outside. we begin with today in the bay's bob rydell hitting traffic hot spots. >> good morning. 101 passing southbound now through palo alto. right now, this is a wind event. getting some gusts around the low-lying areas. we have our news van, it's a high profile. once you got over the peak, the include, you definitely felt it

out there. it's a wind event. we've seen some light drizzle a long way. if you can take a look out the right side of the vehicle, that's looking west over to san mateo coastline. you can see some of these bands that are starting to come in, this is what's on its way. it definitely looks like it's not going to be rather soon and certainly something that will affect your morning commute. if you get out right now, now's the time to do it. traffic's moderate. that is on the way. looks like we're approaching it. bob rydell, "today in the bay." live at the highway 17

summit of the santa cruz mountains. how's it looking now? >> the rain has stopped but the wind is still here. as for the roadways, notorious highway 17 looks good today. you're heading down the hill, to the santa cruz mountains or heading over the hill into san jose. traffic seems to be moving at the limit. we haven't seen any problems. chp tells us no major problems. we just happened to talk to a truck driver who is making his way from union city and santa cruz. the drive has been just fine so far and he is bracing for much worse. >> worrying about the other

people driving. other than that, it's not too bad. >> it's doozy. >> as long as you go slow, it's okay. >> that is the best advice we can tell you today. the speed limit out here on highway 17 is 55. so keep that in mind. meteorologist christina loren says the bulk of the rain is expected to hit about 8:00 so we're still about an hour away from that. we're experiencing the calm before the storm. live in the santa cruz mountains, marla tellez, "today in the bay." >> monitoring it all for us. >> good morning. about 13 minutes away from the kickoff of the morning's rush. the winds are going to be at their worst within that rush hour. it's going to be a rough drive to work. you can get the best conditions

of the morning. winds are calm. look at this very potent front on the way to the bay area. traditionally our storm systems come in. they slowly make their way south. this front is smacking us right from the vertical direction. that's going to continue to be a very strong factor. why we're getting such gusty winds. we're noticing some pretty strong storms developing. you want to travel cautiously. we haven't had any strong thunderstorms in the bay area just yet. we stop the clock on your future cast. at 8:00 a.m., the worst point will come through. the winds will be whipping at that point. you want to tie down loose objects in your backyard.

all the way from 3:00 p.m. today through about 3:00 p.m. tomorrow. then as we head through late thursday into friday, the heavier rain arrives with the second system that's packing twice as much rain as the system today. guess what time it arrives, just in time for the morning rush on friday. it's going to be another rough drive. the winds will be strong with the second system as well. we are expecting the potential for downed trees. we will keep you updated. we'll have the latest for you. look at how much rain wear expecting. over seven inches expected. over 5 inches expected in san mateo. here in the south bay, we have 4 to 5 inches of rainfall. because it's coming down so quickly, the potential for

flooding heightens. late saturday into sunday, that is going to bring our totals up. it's going to double the totals between the first two systems. the sun will come back out on tuesday. but not before we have major storm reports to bring to you. stick with us all morning, we will show you the storm what it does to the bay area as we move on shore. that's when we're expecting the worst of it. 6:49. mike has been all over your drive. he's two steps ahead of the storm system. >> tracking something two steps behind us. trying to keep it real. we are looking at the effects of that rain. things are drying out just in time. here we're looking at northbound. 87 coming into downtown. that's a tough drive now. northbound 101. that's pretty mild, 280 starts

we have the rain and moist conditions causing an issue here on the roadways. 580 out of the castro valley. the dublin interchange. some slowing out of livermore. typical for the ild. and south for 680, we're seeing that build of the traffic volume. as well as potential for some more rain. we have the backup because of the metering lights are on. the wind is whipping through. going to complicate things on the east shore freeway. wiest end with that look. 680, it's a smooth drive right now, but about ten minutes ago, we had a big bunch of clouds coming through. prepare for that for the morning commute. plan some extra time. back to you. >> the bay bridge and all that wind out there, already making the morning commute rough for a few people. what's it look like? >> forget your hairstyle today,

it is windy at the bay bridge. they tell me they are definitely keeping an eye on the bay bridge. all the bridge because they know this weather system is moving in. i also spoke with caltrans. they're saying it could affect some of the workers on the new bridge. i want you to see the toll plaza. you can see it is very busy. the backup is long. the rain hasn't hit steady yet. on the bridge, you'll want to hold on tight. winds could get 50 miles an hour. we're hearing that trees could blow down, wind advisory in effect. i just spoke with caltrans. contractors are now deciding whether they will remove some workers off the cables and high parts. they don't want them out there when it's storming. first concern they say rain. second concern is wind. this would affect they're saying about 20 to 50 workers in the

high areas. engineers and other workers not in those high posts would continue on today as normal. they tell me they will be making that call by 7:00 this morning, whether those high post bridge work erbs will continue or not. i wanted to show you what the flags are doing this morning. wind blowing very brisky. you can feel it. you can see the clouds moving in. you can feel it is definitely heading this way. reporting live at the bay bridge toll plaza, christy smith, "today in the bay." crews hope a hillside will hold up in the coming lane. in front of hillside park this morning. city manager says they have spent half a million dollars just to shore up that hillside after a water pipe broke sending thousands of gallons of mud and water flowing into the streets below. they say the hillside is still being monitored around the clock.

new information out of sfo this morning. united express has just canceled 20 flights due to the storm. and more are expected throughout the day. also, the duty manager at the airport says to expect arriving flights to experience delays of up to four hours. definitely a good idea to call ahead. reporting two power outages in union city affecting about 150 people. it's still unclear whether or not those outages are weather related. >> pg&e sharing some safety tips if you experience a power outage. if the power does go out, the utility says to use battery operated flashlights not candles and have extra batteries ready. make sure to turn off all electric appliances to avoid overloading sir cucircuits when power does go back on. if you see a downed power line, assume it is live and stay away. to report neighborhood power outages, you can call pg&e at
